[Film] The Broken Circle Breakdown - Life Dilemma

Tell me, which one is the most painful? Injection, punch, or tattoo?
Being a spoiler isn’t my thing, so, I won’t discuss any plot at this article. Relax

Erase or Cover up?
If u had a so grieved memory as to kill ur heart and soul, what would u do?  Would u erase it as Jim Carrey did in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (My favorite film) or cover it up as Elise did in “The Broken Circle Breakdown” ?

Elise get her body inked of each her love affair and cover it up when it’s over instead of removing it. How to cover the old tattoo up? Blend it with another one. In other words, the old tattoo isn’t removed but shows up in the new way. So to speak, it doesn’t disappear and hide underneath the new one.

The past coexists with the new life.

Some people want to change their names or find a new place nobody knows them for restarting a new life. Keep their secrets in the attic of memory. Or pretend forgetting them. Or, go to a crazy clinic to ask doctor to erase them (If this skill was visible, there would be a peaceful earth without any hate.)
The point is, if u can’t deal with ur past, no matter how many times u change ur name or find more and more remote islands to relive, it still doesn’t work. U still can’t get it over till defeat it. So, let the past brings the devil on and faces it.

Permanence
“I like the stars. It's the illusion of permanence.” ~Neil Gaiman

We do believe that star is a symbol of eternity. Like their daughter, Maybelle, did. Choose to believe that the dead bird had soul and was transformed to star in the sky and shine for her. However, her father, Didier didn’t believe it.

What does the tattoo stands for? Permanence? Or, concretize memory?  Let’s get it straight, why we do tattoo? For fun, art, or reminding us of precious memory? “What could possibly be worth putting on your body and never be removed?” Didier told to Elise when they first meet at her tattoo store. “But there are lots of worthwhile things in my life ” he continued. Did u find the contradictory he said? Like the theme song sings “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” This contradictory put he and Elise into dilemma. How to solve the paradox? By our choices. Choose to believe it or not. To wit, the belief.

The belief is the only thing stays permanent.

So, back to the question I ask at the beginning, which one is the most painful? U will find out the answer in the film.

BTW, This film is from Belgium which lets me know that “F**k You” is an international language totally.
