[Series] Looking- Chapter 1 "Mirror ,mirror on the wall. What is Love in the world"

Gay people is not an alien, ok? We are human beings, just like u and me. We have a lot of issues to face, to confront and to fight namely love, family, dream and something else. Some guys said they are disappointed at “Looking” because of lacking of explicit sex plot or drug abuse scenes as “Queer as folk” Frankly, I’m so glad that sex is not the heart of Looking but the life issue instead.

From the left: Augustin, Patrick and Dom
I dunno why a lot gay film or TV series like depicting gay as horny as rabbit (maybe this is the main reason that people take rabbit as nickname of gay people). I think it reflects that how straight people think of us, fuck and use drug everyday but it is not the truth (Maybe some gay’s life really is, but not all gay have such physical power and plenty of leisure time ).

Sorry for digression. Let’s back to the orbit. In my opinion, the trio friends, Patrick, Agustin and Dom represent 3 issues of life: Love, Self-value and Dream. So I divide this article into 3 chapters, let’s talk about the leading role Patrick first. To wit , talk about the Love issue first.

Home and society education burry bombs in our personalities
At episode 1, Patrick said “ Like she somehow knew where I was and she was calling to stop me from becoming of those gays.”

Home and society education play a crucial role in our life. They make our personality, make who we are and make us know how to treat friend or enemy. However, the stereotype is rooted deeply in our mind by them sneakily. We can’t find out what kind of stereotype bomb they bury till it explodes.

Like Patrick felt uncomfortable when he and Richie, his Mexican barber boyfriend, meet Kevin couple unexpectedly at park and lied to them that Richie is going to have his own barber shop in the near future in front of Richie’s face. Pat’s awkward body language and weird talking tone explain everything, he embarrassed with R’s occupation and race. Pat rather hided these two problems than admit them.

At the wedding day, these hidden bombs came to the light and drive him crazy.

“I judge him based on what you are gonna think of him.” Patrick said to his mother on his sister wedding day. Although home and education play a crucial role in our personality and root some stereotypes in our thoughts we secretly, when they surface, it is the time we have to face them and disposal it instead of hiding them or watch them explode.

“You have ur own issue about where I am from, I know you think u don’t, but u do.” Richie said it to Patrick. And it is too late for Patrick to stop the bomb.
Richie(L) and Patrick(R) take a lovely walk.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Who is the Mr/Ms Right of them all
The loved one can mirror some parts of u, the really who u are, or reflect the person who u want to be. So we chase the people we admire, we want to be and we think we love them, however, the reason why we love them contains their wealth, social status, race and something else. Do u still love them without those reason?

If u still, there is another problem coming up. How do ur family and friends think of them?

Love should has no boundaries on race, age, social status(However, there are some strictly boundaries on “looking”, u know what I am talking about), yet u know what, when people judge u by checking ur loved one, these all become obstacles on the way u chase for love.

Patrick wants to have boyfriend graduate from famous college and have amazing job which can let him show off to his family and friends and make himself proud. The most important of the all is this kind of boyfriend such as Kevin can meet his mother’s standard precisely. However, Richie doesn’t have those make-Patrick–proud terms. So to speak, he doesn’t meet his mother’s what-wrong-with-that standard. Patrick is like us in life. We confine ourselves with the shackles of how people judge us and forget to chase the love which is good for us.

His mother thinks he should take the full responsibility for couldn’t have Richie attend the wedding instead of blame all the fault on her
